Neutering
We neuter everything that is old enough before it leaves us. The reasons that you should consider neutering are as follows:-
Castration of Cats
- Males that are not castrated are not very pleasant to live with. They smell really bad. This is because they scent areas to let other cats know they have been around. They often spray urine onto furniture and around your home to mark their territory. If you have him castrated at 6 months old he will never feel the need to start this process.
- Un-neutered males fight. They have to protect their area. This will often lead to abscesses and huge injuries requiring frequent visits to the Vet. Your cat will also often attack neighbours cats to keep them out of his area making you very un-popular with them also and ensuring you will have even more veterinary bills from their cats.
- Because the males fight, they will often contract diseases such as feline aids or leukaemia , these are incurable and will cause premature death.
- Male cats will roam a huge territory to find un-neutered females. This will take them across lots of roads and often leads to a premature death via car or motorbike.
- It is also psychologically cruel. Cats will still live as though wild with a few home comforts if they are not tapered to our way of life by curbing these behaviours by neutering them. Can you imagine, they should have huge expanses of land to be the dominant male over, but they only have our back garden and they are having to spend their entire existence defending a larger area which has lots of other people’s cats in it. Not a very relaxing or restful experience for them.
Cats can be castrated from 5½ months old. This is when we advise you to have this procedure carried out at a veterinary clinic. It will range from about £35-£45 so is not going to break the bank.
Castration of Dogs
- Male dogs can become very dominant. Castration will stop them producing testosterone and they will not feel the need to dominate.
- Male dogs can become sexually frustrated and will start, embarrassingly for you, humping dogs in the park. This will not go down well with other dog owners and their dogs possibly ending up in fights and bite wounds.
- Testicular cancer and prostate cancer can avoided if your dog has not got his testicles
- Scent marking every lamp post (which leads to a long walk) can be reduced by castration.
Castration of your dog can be carried out from 7 months of age. The cost will vary depending on your dogs weight.
